Turned
Cremation Urn

When Jackson
- our friend and companion of thirteen years - passed
away, I wanted to do something special in his honor. So I
turned this cremation urn to hold his ashes.

It was turned from a block of black cherry. It is
approximately
6-3/4" high (including the lid) and 4-3/4" in diameter at the widest.
The internal volume is approximately 600 ml.
The two
photos below show the blank I started with, and the roughed out form on
the lathe. After finishing the body of the vessel and parting
it off, I turned the lid
from the remaining wood.

I applied a custom finish that I mixed myself. It consisted
of equal parts of:
- McCloskey's Spar Marine Varnish
- 100% pure Tung Oil (Woodcraft brand)
- Turpentine
This essentially is a rubbing varnish. After
sanding down to 600 grit, I applied it to the urn on the
lathe, spinning at low speed. I let soak in
for about 5 minutes, then wiped off the excess, buffing with a
soft cloth. After waiting 24 hours, I repeated the process.
I applied five coats in this manner, building up a beautiful,
lustrous shine. Then I applied a coat of Minwax Paste Wax,
and buffed out with a medium cotton buffing wheel and tripoli buffing
compound.
