Frequently
Asked Questions
Q:
How do you pronounce "Nestlerode"?
A: It's easy! Just like it's spelled! :)
Ok, break
it down into its two root words: "nestle" (as in, "The
children
were nestled all snug in their beds.") and "rode" (as in, "He rode
a pale horse."). Or, if you prefer phonetically:
nessle-road.
Q:
How long have you been woodworking? How'd you learn?
A: Not long, since around 2000, 2001. I started
turning a
few years later. I'm completely self-taught from books,
magazines, and the Internet.
Q:
Any other woodworking projects?
A: Yes, several others, actually. I'm trying to
post more
content as time allows. Please check back from time to time...
Q:
Is that Latin on the home page? What does it mean?
A: Yes. "Memoria
in aeterna" is Latin for "In eternal remembrance".
Q:
What's with the "Recommended Reading" I see on some pages?
A: I participate in Amazon.com's affiliate program.
If you
click on, and then buy one of those books, I get a (very) small
percentage.
Q:
Your wife is hot! How'd you score such a babe?
A: Thank you, I think so, too! As to how I snagged
her, it
was obviously a combination of my charm, animal magnetism, and dumb
luck. If you'd really like to know more (and see more
photos!),
read: "When Joe Met Evelyn".
Q:
Do you code your own html/website? What do you use?
A: Yes, I do all my own coding. The main pages of
this site (home, about, contact, etc) were derived from a free
template, which I modified by hand using the excellent Bluefish programming editor.
Some of the older photo pages were generated with the 'Album' perl script, which I
modified slightly. These days, I'm using the versatile, cross-platform Nvu program. It allows
me to do most things WYSIWYG, but still lets me get my hands dirty in
the code to tweak things. Plus, it runs on Linux and Mac, my
two platforms of choice.
Q:
I'm a
[friend/relative/stalker] looking for gift ideas...
A: Evelyn and I both
maintain Wish Lists on Amazon.com. You'll find
Evelyn's here, and mine is here.
If you can't find anything you like on Amazon, Gift
Cards
from major retailers are always appreciated! We both like L.L. Bean. For
me, Lee
Valley Tools or Woodcraft are
also good choices. Evelyn loves Petite
Sophisticate and Ann
Taylor Loft.
Q:
If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
A: I've given this one a lot of thought.
I'd have to go with teleportation, such as Gilbert
Gossein's amazing ability in A.E. van Vogt's scifi classic "The
World of Null-A ", or like
Nightcrawler's special talent in "X-Men:
United ".
Q:
What's next for you?
A: Hmmm, kind of a broad question, so I'll break it down:
Professional:
I'm quite happy here at DuPont, and have at
least another decade before I'll retire. Upon retirement (at
either age 55, which is the earliest I could go, or 58, which is more
likely), I'm toying with the idea of seeking employment in the
healthcare sector, possibly in a lab in an area hospital.
I've read articles about how much in demand second-career
Baby Boomers are becoming, especially in the service and healthcare
industries...
Personal:
Now that Jack has passed away,
Evelyn and I hope to spend more time traveling. We have our
sights on South America for next year. Also, I'd like to continue honing
my woodworking skills, and concentrate more on turning. I'm
always thinking about adding to this website, as well. I've
been considering starting a niche blog on woodturning, and I've even
registered the domain "JoeWoodturner.com" to use for it. Now
I just need to find the time...
