Ira M. Nestlerode, age 81, of Avis, PA passed away on March 10, 2006 at the Manor Care facility in Jersey Shore. Ira was born in Lock Haven on October 1, 1924, the son of the Alice D. and Joseph L. Nestlerode. His parents and his identical twin, Jacob, preceded him in death. Ira was a decorated war veteran. During World War II, he served his country as a heavy machine-gunner with the 325th Glider Infantry of the 82nd Airborne Division of the U.S. Army. He was with the 325th as the Regiment fought their way into the heart of Germany in 1945, and took part in the occupation of Berlin at the end of the war. After the war, Ira went to work for the Hammermill Paper Co. in Lock Haven where he worked for 40 years. He retired from Hammermill in 1986. During his retirement, Ira enjoyed reading, taking daily walks around town, visiting with his friends at the Avis American Legion, and caring for his dogs. Ira is survived by his two sons, Ira A. Nestlerode of Avis, and Joseph Nestlerode and his wife Evelyn of Townsend, Delaware. His grandson, Darin Nestlerode, resides in Kernersville, North Carolina with his wife Paula. His former wife and friend, Josephine (Leone) Hartman lives in Lock Haven. A memorial service will be held at 5 pm on Friday, March 17 at the Walker Funeral Home, 231 High St., Flemington, where visitation will begin at 4 pm. A private interment will be held at the Dunnstown Cemetary. |
