Evelyn
and
I spent 2-1/2 weeks in South America in December 2008. We
flew into Buenos Aires,
Argentina on December 3-4, and spent three days exploring the city.
Then we boarded the
Norwegian Sun for a two week cruise that included stops in Uruguay,
Argentina, Chile, and The Falkland Islands. We flew home from
Santiago, Chile on December 21-22.
The galleries below contain a sampling of the 2500+
photos
that Evelyn and I took. (All
photos taken with a Nikon D90 equiped with a Tamron 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3
lens, unless noted otherwise.)

Overview
For this gallery, I tried to select just
one or two from each place we visited to provide a brief overview of
our trip. If you only have 5
minutes, go
here.
If you have more time, visit the galleries below for many more great
photos!

Buenos Aires, Argentina
What a beautiful, vibrant city! I wish we'd had more time
there.
If you ever have the chance, visit Buenos Aires!
(And
allow yourself at least a week.)

Recoleta Cemetery
Although this is in Buenos Aires, I thought it warranted its own
gallery. This sprawling, surreal "City of the Dead" is the
final resting place for many of Buenos Aires' richest and most famous
people, including Eva Perón (Evita).
We arrived here early Sunday morning, and had the place mostly to
ourselves. Definitely worth a look...

Montevideo, Uruguay
The
first port-of-call of our cruise, Montevideo is the capital of Uruguay
and its largest city. It has a rich architectural heritage
and enjoys one of the highest standards of living in South America.
During our brief visit, I found it fascinating.

highlights here...

 |
Puerto Madryn, Argentina
The second stop on our cruise, the town of Puerto Madryn is a popular
base for travelers visiting Patagonia. While there, we
chartered a day tour to Península Valdés where we saw Maganellic
penguins, guanacos (pictured left), and elephant seals.

|
Stanley, The Falkland Islands
The town of Stanley, capital of the Falkland Islands, is home to
approximately 2100 people. During our day there, we first
travelled to the Lagoon Bluff penguin rookery to see nesting Gentoo and
King penguins. Upon returning to Stanley, we had time to walk
around town before returning to the ship. Photos here...

 |
Ushuaia, Argentina
With a striking backdrop of snow-capped
peaks, Ushuaia (you-shoe-EYE-ah)
is the southern-most
city in the world. Its location makes it a
popular jump-off for Antarctic expeditions. It's also a
stones throw from Tierra del Fuego National Park, which is where we
spent a
good part of our day. View the photos here... |
 |
Cape Horn, Beagle Channel, Straits of
Magellan, Chilean Fjords
This gallery showcases several days we spent cruising the southern tip
of the world. Through the Straits of Magellan, around Cape
Horn,
and up-close to glaciers in the Beagle Channel - see the highlights here. |

|
Punta Arenas, Chile
This was our first port-of-call in Chile. We didn't have any
excursions planned, so we just walked around the town,
relaxed and checked our email in an Internet cafe, toured a
museum, and shopped for
souvenirs.

spaces, architecture, and street scenes here...

|
Chilean Lake District
During our port-of-call in Puerto Montt,
we charted a mini-bus tour of the surrounding Lake District.
The
tour included the towns of Frutillar and Puerto Varas (both on Lake
Llanquihue), Rosales National Park and the Petrohue
Waterfalls, and Puerto Montt. Lunch was provided at the Las
Tranqueras restaurant. See the photos here...
|

|
Valparaiso/Santiago, Chile
Our 14 day cruise ended Sunday morning in Valparaiso, Chile.
Our
flight home wasn't until 9pm, so we had the entire day to tour
Valparaiso, Viña del Mar, and Santiago.

South America here...

Just Penguins!
As the name suggests, this gallery is nothing but penguins. Three
different species - Magellanic, Gentoo, and King - that
we photographed in the Falkland Islands and Península Valdés,
Argentina. (If you've viewed the Falkland Islands and
Puerto Madryn galleries, you've already seen most of these.)
If you've just come here for the penguins, this
gallery is
for you.

Artistic Merit
If you've made it this far, you're in for a
treat, because I've saved the best for last. These are my
favorites, from a photographic perspective.
