Turned Vase

These photos show some of the steps in turning a small vase.  (Technically, this is known as a "weed pot" because it isn't completely hollowed out; rather there is just a hole drilled down the center.)

This was turned from a block of walnut.  It was finished with three coats of boiled linseed oil and a final coat of paste wax.  Overall height: 5-1/4".

Turning Details

I started with a block of walnut approximately 3" x 3" x 7".  After mounting between centers, the block is turned to a cylinder, as shown below.

After turning a slight tenon on one end, I removed the blank from between centers and mounted it in my 4-jawed TeknaTool Nova chuck.

Below, the tail stock is moved back into position to provide extra support, and the vase begins to take shape.

Here I've removed the tail stock and cut the top to it's final shape.  See how I drill out the center and finish the vase on page two...
