Woodworking & Wood Turning

Below are a few of my woodworking and wood turning projects.  Follow the links for additional (and larger) photos, and more detailed descriptions.

Cherry Burl with Coffee

To Infinity and Beyond!

When I accepted a new assignment at work last year,  I wanted to give my supervisor of 10 years a parting gift.  Since he's always had a keen interest in NASA and the space program, the choice was clear.  View photos and construction details here...

Mahogany Bowl

Becky's Bowl

Turned from a slab of mahogany,  which was among some wood given to me by one of my neighbors.  View photos here...

Cherry Burl with Coffee

A unique method of filling large voids left  this bowl fully caffeinated.  Learn more...

Jack's Urn

Cremation Urn

As a final gift for a dear friend, I turned a cremation urn to hold his ashes. View photos and read more here.

Turned Ornaments

Turned Ornaments

The two smaller ones are cherry.  The ball of the center one was turned from a small maple burl, and the finial and tail are walnut.  (Click here or on the thumb for a larger view...)

Bowl, unknown species, Aug 07

Mystery Bowl

I made this bowl for my Mother-in-Law for her birthday.  I'd love to know what kind of tree it was.  Send me an email if you think you know...  (More photos and description after the jump...)

Custom chess/checkerboard

Custom Checkerboard

I made this walnut and maple checkerboard for my Father-in-Law's 70th birthday. There are photos and commentary on the construction process here.

Walnut Vase

Walnut Vase

This series of photos shows the procedure for turning a small vase.  (Technically, this is known as a "weed pot" because it is not hollowed out - there is hole drilled down the center for stems.)

Jewelry Box

Jewelry Box

I made this jewelry box for Evelyn for Christmas a couple years ago.  It's constructed of cherry, with walnut accents. More photos after the jump...

Chinese Hat Box

Chinese Hat Box

This small box with an Asian-inspired design is commonly referred to as a Chinese Hat Box.  It was turned from a piece of pear wood.  I have a series of photos detailing the turning process here.
