Toy Rocket

Mark, my friend and supervisor at DuPont for the past 10 years, has always had a keen interest in NASA and the US space program.  He's attended several shuttle launches and has beautiful framed photos of the shuttle and the International Space Station adorning his office.

When I was asked to take a new position last year, I wanted to give him a small parting gift.  This is what I came up with...

Toy Rocket

The rocket is constucted of walnut and maple.  The spire and engine are ebonized walnut.  Overall height is approximately 10-1/2 inches, including the launch pad.

Construction Notes

The command module was secured to the rocket body with wood glue and dowels prior to turning, as pictured here.

To draw a template for the fins, I used a contour gauge to transfer the arc of the body to paper...

Of course the biggest design challenge was attaching the fins because I knew glue alone would not hold.  My solution was to fashion tiny floating tenons from small nails, drill corresponding holes in the fins and body to accept the tenons, and secure with epoxy.
